INK + COTTON

The pieces I create use two simple materials as a foundation: black ink on textured cotton paper. Some of them incorporate other materials, such as paint, to add a subtle addition, for added texture or highlight - but the soul of my work is black and white. I combine various line-weights and patterns to create texture, a sort of intricate movement that keeps the eye leaping from one shape to the next.

This work gives me an escape from the chaos of the outside world, a calm, peaceful hum that radiates from the motion of moving through each line, but keeps me dancing inside, eager to jump along to each abstract landscape I bring to life. I find myself submersed somewhere completely new with each stroke, breathing into each section a new story…microscopic cities, underwater cosmos, galactic forests: this feeling is one that I wish to invoke in those who view my art.

I also want it to feel strange… to perhaps seem intriguingly chaotic at a distance, but when focused on a single section - I want the viewer to find that the world does quiet a bit…and offer clarity…and maybe a hint of awe. This is the sensation of my work that I appreciate and desire the most - as it speaks to my self observations in recent years. With the strive for growth, endurance of pain, challenge of organization, wonder, and vulnerability needed to step forward each day… all we need is a bit of focus on the roots.
